Maritime Osteopathy
Bridgewater, Nova Scotia
Osteopathy operates on a belief that the musculoskeletal system plays a vital role in health and disease and that the body contains all of the elements it needs to maintain health if properly balanced. It is believed that by correcting the problems in the body's structure, through the use of osteopathic manipulative techniques, the body's ability to function and to heal itself can be greatly improved. Osteopaths promote the idea of preventive medicine and endorse the philosophy that the focus should be on treating the whole patient, rather than just the disease.
In reaction to physical trauma or emotional stress, the body tissues may contract, whether it be as a result from physical "bumps" or emotional stress. Any of the consequential strains, sprains, stresses, trauma or tensions which are unresolved in the body restrict the body's functioning and may give rise to problems in the future. The affects can be either physical (eg. back pain, migraine or digestive disorders) or emotional (eg. anxiety or depression). The restrictions in the body's functioning ability expresses itself in quality of movement by the body. Osteopathic manual therapists are trained to identify both subtle and larger physical motions in the body and use this information to identify areas where there is restriction or congestion.
As osteopaths, we use a wide range of hands-on techniques, including gentle stretching, joint mobilization, and cranial techniques to achieve our goal, and help you feel better. Better function of the body is thereby achieved by restoring motion, reducing inflammation & tension, enhancing blood flow & lymphatic drainage. Our flexibility and the breadth of our approach allows us to focus on every patient’s precise needs. No two patients are ever treated the same way.
Osteopaths assess and treat people of any age from the elderly to the newborn, and from pregnant women to athletes. We’re confident we can help, and if we can’t make a difference, we will tell you after a session or two.
